Laptop Not Detecting Wi-Fi — How to Restore Wireless Connectivity

7 min read

Start by identifying which Wi-Fi problem you actually have: the laptop sees no networks, one expected network is missing, or the laptop connects to Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet. Those symptoms have different causes, so avoid resetting every network setting at once.

Before changing network settings #

  • Confirm that you know the Wi-Fi password before choosing Forget This Network.
  • Save VPN, proxy, static IP, DNS, and virtual-network settings before using a network reset.
  • On work, school, hotel, apartment, or other managed Wi-Fi, contact the administrator before changing security or adapter settings.
  • Do not factory-reset a router unless its owner and internet provider have confirmed the recovery procedure. A factory reset can erase the internet login, phone, TV, mesh, and security configuration.
  • Never disable router encryption to make an older device connect. Use WPA3 Personal, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional, or WPA2 Personal with AES when compatible.

Find out whether the laptop or network is responsible #

Perform these two tests near the router:

  1. Check whether another phone or computer can see and use the expected Wi-Fi network.
  2. Check whether the affected laptop can see another trusted network, such as a personal hotspot you control.

Use the result to choose a path:

  • No device can see the network: The router or access point may be off, restarting, misconfigured, or experiencing an outage.
  • Other devices work, but the laptop sees no networks: Focus on the laptop’s Wi-Fi radio, operating system, driver, or hardware.
  • The laptop sees other networks, but not yours: Check router bands, security mode, hidden-network settings, and range.
  • The laptop connects but says No internet: Check the router, modem, captive portal, VPN, IP address, and internet-provider status.

Safe checks for every laptop #

1. Turn Wi-Fi on and Airplane mode off #

On Windows 11, select the network, sound, or battery area on the taskbar. Confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. On a Mac, open Control Center or the Wi-Fi menu and turn Wi-Fi on.

Some laptops have a physical wireless switch or a function key. Use the icon and the laptop manufacturer’s manual; do not assume the same Fn key works on every model.

2. Restart the laptop #

Save open work and choose Restart. A restart can renew the network address and reload the supported Wi-Fi software without deleting saved networks.

3. Check range and interference #

Test in the same room as the router. Disconnect an unshielded USB 3 device or dock temporarily if the problem began when it was attached, because some devices can interfere with 2.4 GHz reception. Do not place the router inside a cabinet or behind large metal objects.

4. Restart the router only when authorized #

If multiple devices are affected and you control the network, use the router or internet provider’s restart instructions. A restart is not a factory reset. Everyone using the network will be disconnected temporarily.

Wait until the modem and router status lights finish their normal startup sequence before testing again. If you do not control the network, report the outage instead.

Windows 11 steps #

1. Run the current Network and Internet troubleshooter #

Open Get Help from Start, enter “connect to network and internet,” and choose Run network diagnostics. Follow the results shown by Get Help.

Do not use old msdt.exe shortcuts. Microsoft has moved supported Windows 11 networking diagnostics to Get Help.

2. Forget only the affected network #

Use this when the expected network appears but authentication or connection repeatedly fails:

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks.
  2. Select the affected network and choose Forget.
  3. Select the network from the taskbar and enter its password again.

Forgetting a network removes its stored credentials and custom settings. It does not help when the Wi-Fi adapter cannot see any networks.

3. Check Windows Update and the adapter #

Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Review Advanced options → Optional updates for an adapter driver offered for the exact laptop model.

Then open Device Manager → Network adapters:

  • If the Wi-Fi adapter appears normally, do not uninstall it just because the connection failed once.
  • If it is disabled, enable that exact adapter and test.
  • If it shows a warning icon, record the Device status error code.
  • If it is missing, choose View → Show hidden devices and use the laptop manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics.

Use drivers from Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. Before uninstalling a driver as a late troubleshooting step, download the replacement from the manufacturer on another device and save it to removable media.

4. Use Network reset only as a last software step #

If Get Help, updates, a restart, and reconnecting have failed, open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset.

Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and restores their settings to defaults. After restarting, you may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other networking tools. Known connections may return as public networks. Do not use this on a managed PC without administrator approval.

macOS steps #

1. Follow Wi-Fi Recommendations #

Open the Wi-Fi menu. If Wi-Fi Recommendations appears, select it and review the issue macOS detected. Restart the Mac, confirm date and time are correct, and install a macOS update through System Settings → General → Software Update when another trusted connection is available.

2. Forget and rejoin one network #

Use this only when the network appears but the Mac cannot authenticate or reconnect:

  1. Open System Settings → Wi-Fi.
  2. Select Details beside the connected or known network.
  3. Choose Forget This Network.
  4. Rejoin it and enter the password.

Do not use private airport utilities or Terminal commands to erase saved networks. Their locations and behavior are not a supported user interface and can change between macOS versions.

3. Renew the DHCP lease when connected without internet #

If the Mac joins Wi-Fi but has no usable network address, open System Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Details → TCP/IP and choose Renew DHCP Lease. This requests a new address without deleting every network configuration.

If a manually assigned IP address is required by the network administrator, do not replace it with DHCP without their approval.

4. Check VPN and network-filter software #

A VPN, content filter, security product, or organization profile can affect internet access even when Wi-Fi is connected. On a personally managed Mac, disconnect a VPN temporarily and test; reconnect it afterward. Do not remove organization profiles or disable managed security software—contact the administrator.

5. Run Wireless Diagnostics #

Try to join the affected network. Hold Option while selecting the Wi-Fi menu, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Follow the prompts. Apple states that Wireless Diagnostics analyzes the connection without changing network settings and creates a report useful to an administrator or support technician.

Do not perform a generic SMC reset for Wi-Fi. Apple silicon Macs do not use the old Intel SMC key sequence, and a Wi-Fi problem should first be handled with supported network diagnostics.

If only one Wi-Fi network is missing #

The router and laptop may not share a compatible band, radio mode, or security setting.

  • Enable all router bands supported by the router rather than forcing a single newest-only mode.
  • Use automatic channel selection unless the router manufacturer or network administrator recommends otherwise.
  • Avoid WEP, WPA Personal, TKIP, or an open network. These modes are insecure and can cause compatibility warnings.
  • Check whether the network name is hidden. A hidden name is not a security feature and makes joining more error-prone.
  • Apply router changes consistently to mesh nodes and access points.

Back up the router configuration before changing it. If it is supplied by the internet provider, use the provider’s instructions.

If Wi-Fi connects but the internet does not work #

  1. Try two known websites and another internet-dependent app. One failed site does not prove the connection is down.
  2. On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in or captive-portal notification and follow the network operator’s instructions.
  3. Test another device on the same network.
  4. Check the modem/router status and the internet provider’s outage information from another connection.
  5. On Windows, run Get Help network diagnostics. On a Mac, renew the DHCP lease and run Wireless Diagnostics.

A successful ping to one numeric address does not prove DNS, web access, account authentication, VPN routing, or the wider internet is working.

When the Wi-Fi adapter may have failed #

Hardware becomes more likely when the adapter is absent from Device Manager or System Information, no networks appear even beside a known-good router, and operating-system diagnostics report a wireless hardware problem.

  • On Windows, run the laptop manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics and record any code.
  • On Mac, run Apple Diagnostics; Apple advises service if it reports a Wi-Fi hardware problem.
  • A known-good USB Wi-Fi adapter can help isolate the internal radio, but success does not prove whether the internal card, antenna, firmware, or connection is the failed part.

Do not open the laptop or reconnect antenna leads without the exact service procedure and appropriate repair skills.

Verify the repair #

Wi-Fi is restored only when all relevant checks pass:

  • The expected network appears consistently after a restart.
  • The laptop reconnects using the correct security and password.
  • The laptop receives an IP address from the router.
  • Multiple websites and internet-dependent apps work.
  • Sleep and wake do not immediately break the connection.
  • VPN or managed network software works again after any temporary test.

If only this laptop still fails on multiple known-good networks, contact the laptop manufacturer, Apple, Microsoft, or a qualified repair provider with the adapter status, error codes, diagnostic results, and steps already tested.
