How to Record Your Screen on Windows 11 — Video, Audio, and Save Locations

Recording your screen is useful when you need to demonstrate a problem, teach a process, save a presentation, or capture an app in action. Windows 11 includes several recording tools, but each one is best for a different job.

This guide explains how to record with Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, and Microsoft Clipchamp. It also shows where recordings are saved, how to include audio, and what to check when recording does not work.

Before recording, close or hide private messages, account details, passwords, customer information, notifications, and personal files. A screen recording can reveal much more than the action you intended to demonstrate.

Quick answer: choose the right screen recorder #

• Use Snipping Tool when you want a quick recording of one rectangular area of the screen.
• Use Xbox Game Bar when you want to record one game or application quickly, with an optional microphone.
• Use Clipchamp when you want to select a screen, window, or browser tab and then trim, caption, narrate, combine, or export the result.

For the fastest recording of a selected area, press:

Windows key + Shift + R

Select the region, choose Start, perform the steps you want to capture, and then select Stop.

Method 1: record a selected area with Snipping Tool #

Snipping Tool is the simplest built-in choice for a short visual demonstration. It records a rectangular area instead of forcing you to share the entire desktop.

Start a video snip with the keyboard shortcut #

1. Arrange the app or window you want to demonstrate.
2. Press Windows key + Shift + R.
3. Drag around the exact part of the screen you want to record.
4. Select Start and wait for the countdown.
5. Perform the steps you want to show.
6. Select Stop on the recording toolbar.
7. Preview the recording in Snipping Tool.
8. Select Save and choose a clear filename and folder.

Start a recording from the Snipping Tool app #

1. Open Start y busca Snipping Tool.
2. Open the app.
3. Select the Record button instead of the camera button.
4. Select New.
5. Drag to choose the recording area.
6. Select Start, record the process, and then select Stop.
7. Save the finished recording.

Where Snipping Tool recordings are saved #

Treat the recording as unsaved until you have deliberately selected Save and confirmed its location. Choose a folder you will remember, such as Videos, and give the file a descriptive name.

If you cannot find a recording, open Snipping Tool again and check whether the completed recording is still available in its preview window. Also check Recent in File Explorer and sort by Date modified.

Edit the recording in Clipchamp #

After a video snip finishes, current versions of Snipping Tool can offer Edit in Clipchamp. Use it when you need to trim the beginning or end, add captions or audio, or prepare a more polished video.

Snipping Tool is best for quick region capture. If you know that you need narration, a webcam overlay, titles, or several clips, starting directly in Clipchamp is usually more efficient.

Method 2: record an app or game with Xbox Game Bar #

Xbox Game Bar can record a game or an application without setting up a video-editing project. Despite its name, it can be useful for ordinary app demonstrations as well as games.

Start and stop recording #

1. Open the game or application you want to record.
2. Press Windows key + Alt + R to begin recording.
3. Use the app normally while the recording runs.
4. Press Windows key + Alt + R again to stop.

The start-and-stop shortcut is:

To open the full Game Bar controls, press:

Windows key + G

Turn your microphone on or off #

While recording, press Windows key + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. Windows displays a microphone indicator when an app is using the microphone.

Record a short test first. Play it back with headphones and confirm that your voice is clear, the correct microphone is selected, and background noise is acceptable.

Include app and system sounds #

1. Press Windows key + G.
2. Open Settings in Game Bar.
3. Select Capturing.
4. Review which audio sources Game Bar should capture.
5. Close Game Bar and make a short test recording.

Audio settings can vary with Windows and Game Bar updates, connected headsets, and the app being recorded. A 10-second test is safer than discovering after a long recording that the wrong microphone or sound source was used.

Where Xbox Game Bar recordings are saved #

Game Bar saves recordings as MP4 files in:

Videos\Captures

To reach the folder:

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Select Videos.
3. Open Captures.

The filename normally includes the recorded app or game and the recording date and time.

What Game Bar is best at recording #

Game Bar is designed around capturing an active game or app. If you need to record a freely selected rectangle, use Snipping Tool. If you need to move between several apps, capture a browser tab, add a webcam, or edit multiple clips, use Clipchamp.

Method 3: record and edit with Microsoft Clipchamp #

Clipchamp is the most flexible built-in option when the finished video needs narration, a webcam, trimming, captions, text, or other edits. Microsoft identifies Clipchamp as the Windows 11 video editor.

Start a screen recording in Clipchamp #

1. Open Start, search for Clipchamp, and open it.
2. Create a new video project.
3. Select Record & create.
4. Select Screen o Screen & camera.
5. Allow microphone or camera access only if you need those devices.
6. Select the microphone you want to use, or turn audio recording off.
7. Select the red recording button.
8. Choose a browser tab, a window, or the entire screen when prompted.
9. Enable audio sharing if the selection offers it and you need it.
10. Select Share and perform the demonstration.
11. Select Stop sharing when finished.
12. Preview the result and choose Save and edit.

Understand Clipchamp audio choices #

Your microphone records narration and nearby sound. Shared system or tab audio records sound produced by the selected source. These are different inputs.

The exact audio choices depend on whether you selected a browser tab, window, or entire screen and whether you are using the Windows app or a supported browser. Microsoft notes that browser-tab audio has method-specific limitations, so always inspect the sharing dialog and make a test recording.

Record your screen and webcam together #

Choose Screen & camera when you want your face visible during a presentation or tutorial. Clipchamp captures the screen and camera so you can resize and position the camera video in the project.

Before recording:

• Put the camera near eye level.
• Check what is visible behind you.
• Use front lighting rather than a bright window behind you.
• Select the intended camera and microphone.
• Record a brief test and listen to it.

Save and export the finished video #

Clipchamp may retain or download the original recording as part of the recording workflow. After editing, select Export to create the finished video file. Choose an appropriate resolution and confirm the final destination.

Keep the original recording until you have watched the exported video from beginning to end. This gives you a recovery point if an edit, caption, or export setting was wrong.

Record a clean, useful tutorial #

Good screen recordings are planned before the Record button is pressed.

1. Write down the shortest path through the task.
2. Close unrelated apps and browser tabs.
3. Turn on Do not disturb or silence notifications.
4. Move private files off the desktop.
5. Increase text size or browser zoom if viewers need to read small controls.
6. Position the pointer before recording begins.
7. Speak slowly and pause briefly after important clicks.
8. Avoid rapid pointer circles and unnecessary window movement.
9. Record a short test with audio.
10. Review the final export before sharing it.

Screen recording has no sound #

Work through these checks in order:

1. Confirm the microphone was enabled in the recorder.
2. Check whether you selected the correct microphone, especially when a headset or dock is connected.
3. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
4. Turn on Microphone access and the relevant app-access setting.
5. For a traditional desktop program, review Let desktop apps access your microphone.
6. Make another short recording and play it back.

If narration is present but app sound is missing, inspect the recorder’s system-audio or sharing choice. Microphone access alone does not guarantee that audio from an app or browser tab will be captured.

The recording shortcut does nothing #

Snipping Tool shortcut does not open #

1. Open Snipping Tool from Start and check whether the Record option appears.
2. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and check for app updates.
3. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Snipping Tool → Advanced options.
4. Try Repair before using Reset.
5. Restart Windows and test again.

Reset can remove app data or preferences, so use it only after Repair fails.

Xbox Game Bar shortcut does not work #

1. Open Settings.
2. Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar.
3. Confirm Game Bar is enabled.
4. Open the target game or app before pressing Windows key + Alt + R.
5. Press Windows key + G and check whether the Capture controls open.

If Game Bar cannot capture the content you need, switch to Snipping Tool for a region or Clipchamp for a screen, window, or browser tab.

The recording is black, blank, or incomplete #

A black recording can be caused by protected video, hardware acceleration, graphics-driver behavior, an app running with different permissions, or selecting the wrong window or screen.

• Confirm that you selected the intended monitor, window, or browser tab.
• Test a simple non-protected app such as Calculator.
• Avoid attempting to bypass copy protection or record protected streaming content.
• Close and reopen the recorder and target app.
• Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store app updates.
• If one method fails, test another built-in method.

If Calculator records correctly but one specific app remains black, the issue is likely limited to that app or protected content rather than the entire recording system.

The recording is choppy or the file is too large #

Screen recording uses processor, graphics, memory, and storage resources at the same time.

• Close games, browser tabs, virtual machines, and other demanding apps you do not need.
• Confirm the drive has enough free space before a long recording.
• Record a smaller region when the full screen is unnecessary.
• Use a sensible export resolution for the way the video will be viewed.
• Split a long tutorial into shorter sections.
• Keep the computer connected to power during a long recording.

Protect private information before sharing #

Watch the entire finished recording at least once before uploading or sending it. Look for:

• Passwords, recovery codes, or autofill suggestions.
• Email addresses and account names.
• Notifications and message previews.
• Browser bookmarks and open tab titles.
• Personal filenames and desktop items.
• Customer, employer, school, financial, or health information.
• Wi-Fi names, device names, serial numbers, or license keys.
• Voices or faces of people who did not agree to be recorded.

Cropping a video later may not remove private information shown elsewhere in the frame. Preventing it from appearing is safer than trying to hide it after recording.

2. Close private and unrelated content.
3. Check storage space and connect power if needed.
