Android menus vary by phone and version, so use your manufacturer’s instructions when a setting is named differently. Do not run a recursive ADB delete command or reformat an SD card as a generic cleanup step.

Back up before deleting

Open Settings → Google → Backup, or the equivalent backup screen on your phone, and check the latest backup time. In Google Photos, confirm that backup is complete for the account you intend to use.

An Android device backup does not necessarily include every app file, authenticator secret, download, or locally stored photo. Verify irreplaceable items separately before deletion or reset.

1. Check storage categories

Open Settings → Storage. Review Apps, Photos and videos, Downloads, Audio, Documents, Trash, and any manufacturer-specific categories. Some devices offer a “Free up space” tool.

Storage is where files are kept; memory is the working RAM used by running apps. Closing apps does not normally create meaningful storage space.

2. Remove unused apps safely

Open the Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & device → Manage. Sort or filter for unused or large apps, then uninstall only apps you recognize.

Android can archive eligible unused apps while preserving their user data. Availability depends on the device, Android version, and whether the app remains available from Google Play.

3. Clear cache, not app storage, unless you understand the consequence

Open Settings → Apps → select an app → Storage & cache.

Clear cache removes temporary data. The app may be slower while rebuilding it.

Clear storage or Clear data permanently removes the app’s local data and signs it out.

Try clearing cache for a specific problem app. Do not clear storage for messaging, authenticator, notes, game, or media apps until you have verified their sync or export method.

4. Review downloads manually

Use Files by Google or the phone’s file manager to review Downloads, large files, duplicates, and old media. Open unfamiliar files before selecting them. Move important files to a verified computer, external drive, or cloud location before deleting the phone’s copy.

Do not use a recursive ADB removal command against the Downloads folder. It bypasses the file manager’s review and trash workflow and can permanently remove every item there. ADB should not be required for ordinary storage cleanup.

5. Free local photo space only after backup verification

In Google Photos, use “Free up space on this device” only after the app says backup is complete and you have confirmed the photos appear in the intended Google account. This removes backed-up local copies; viewing them later may require internet access.

Do not manually delete the only copy from a DCIM folder.

6. Remove offline media inside each app

Streaming music, video, podcast, map, and messaging apps can hold large downloads. Remove downloads inside the app so its database remains accurate. Check WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Google Maps, and similar apps you actually use.

7. Treat SD-card changes as a data migration

Support for SD cards and “internal” or adopted storage varies by manufacturer. Formatting a card erases it. A card formatted as internal storage may be encrypted to that phone and unsuitable for moving between devices.

Before formatting or replacing a card:

Copy its files to another verified location.

Confirm the phone supports the intended storage mode.

Use the phone manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep the old copy until the replacement has been tested.

8. Leave factory reset as the final option

A factory reset erases device data. Use it only after confirming backups, account credentials, authenticator recovery, eSIM or carrier requirements, and any work-profile instructions. A reset is not necessary for routine storage cleanup.

Verifica el resultado

Return to Settings → Storage and confirm available space increased. Open recent photos, messages, documents, and important apps. Confirm that cloud-backed files are accessible from the expected account and that a current device backup completes successfully.

Fuentes

Google: Clear up space on Android

Google: Free up storage on your Android device

Google: Back up or restore data on your Android device

Google: Manage unused apps on your Android device

Google: Transfer files between your computer and Android device

Start by checking which category uses storage and confirming that important photos, messages, documents, and app data are backed up.
