Those symptoms have different causes, so avoid resetting every network setting at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before changing network settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Confirm that you know the Wi-Fi password before choosing Forget This Network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save VPN, proxy, static IP, DNS, and virtual-network settings before using a network reset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On work, school, hotel, apartment, or other managed Wi-Fi, contact the administrator before changing security or adapter settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not factory-reset a router unless its owner and internet provider have confirmed the recovery procedure. A factory reset can erase the internet login, phone, TV, mesh, and security configuration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never disable router encryption to make an older device connect. Use WPA3 Personal, WPA2\/WPA3 Transitional, or WPA2 Personal with AES when compatible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find out whether the laptop or network is responsible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perform these two tests near the router:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check whether another phone or computer can see and use the expected Wi-Fi network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check whether the affected laptop can see another trusted network, such as a personal hotspot you control.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use the result to choose a path:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No device can see the network:<\/strong> The router or access point may be off, restarting, misconfigured, or experiencing an outage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other devices work, but the laptop sees no networks:<\/strong> Focus on the laptop&#8217;s Wi-Fi radio, operating system, driver, or hardware.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The laptop sees other networks, but not yours:<\/strong> Check router bands, security mode, hidden-network settings, and range.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The laptop connects but says No internet:<\/strong> Check the router, modem, captive portal, VPN, IP address, and internet-provider status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safe checks for every laptop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Turn Wi-Fi on and Airplane mode off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Windows 11, select the network, sound, or battery area on the taskbar. Confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. On a Mac, open Control Center or the Wi-Fi menu and turn Wi-Fi on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some laptops have a physical wireless switch or a function key. Use the icon and the laptop manufacturer&#8217;s manual; do not assume the same <code>Fn<\/code> key works on every model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Restart the laptop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Save open work and choose Restart. A restart can renew the network address and reload the supported Wi-Fi software without deleting saved networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Check range and interference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Test in the same room as the router. Disconnect an unshielded USB 3 device or dock temporarily if the problem began when it was attached, because some devices can interfere with 2.4 GHz reception. Do not place the router inside a cabinet or behind large metal objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Restart the router only when authorized<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If multiple devices are affected and you control the network, use the router or internet provider&#8217;s restart instructions. A restart is not a factory reset. Everyone using the network will be disconnected temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait until the modem and router status lights finish their normal startup sequence before testing again. If you do not control the network, report the outage instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Windows 11 steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Run the current Network and Internet troubleshooter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open Get Help from Start, enter \u201cconnect to network and internet,\u201d and choose Run network diagnostics. Follow the results shown by Get Help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not use old <code>msdt.exe<\/code> shortcuts. Microsoft has moved supported Windows 11 networking diagnostics to Get Help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Forget only the affected network<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use this when the expected network appears but authentication or connection repeatedly fails:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open Settings \u2192 Network &amp; internet \u2192 Wi-Fi \u2192 Manage known networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the affected network and choose Forget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the network from the taskbar and enter its password again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forgetting a network removes its stored credentials and custom settings. It does not help when the Wi-Fi adapter cannot see any networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Check Windows Update and the adapter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open Settings \u2192 Windows Update \u2192 Check for updates. Review Advanced options \u2192 Optional updates for an adapter driver offered for the exact laptop model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then open Device Manager \u2192 Network adapters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the Wi-Fi adapter appears normally, do not uninstall it just because the connection failed once.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is disabled, enable that exact adapter and test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it shows a warning icon, record the Device status error code.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is missing, choose View \u2192 Show hidden devices and use the laptop manufacturer&#8217;s hardware diagnostics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use drivers from Windows Update or the laptop manufacturer&#8217;s support page for the exact model. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. Before uninstalling a driver as a late troubleshooting step, download the replacement from the manufacturer on another device and save it to removable media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Use Network reset only as a last software step<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Get Help, updates, a restart, and reconnecting have failed, open Settings \u2192 Network &amp; internet \u2192 Advanced network settings \u2192 Network reset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and restores their settings to defaults. After restarting, you may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other networking tools. Known connections may return as public networks. Do not use this on a managed PC without administrator approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">macOS steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Follow Wi-Fi Recommendations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the Wi-Fi menu. If Wi-Fi Recommendations appears, select it and review the issue macOS detected. Restart the Mac, confirm date and time are correct, and install a macOS update through System Settings \u2192 General \u2192 Software Update when another trusted connection is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Forget and rejoin one network<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use this only when the network appears but the Mac cannot authenticate or reconnect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open System Settings \u2192 Wi-Fi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Details beside the connected or known network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Forget This Network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rejoin it and enter the password.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not use private <code>airport<\/code> utilities or Terminal commands to erase saved networks. Their locations and behavior are not a supported user interface and can change between macOS versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Renew the DHCP lease when connected without internet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Mac joins Wi-Fi but has no usable network address, open System Settings \u2192 Network \u2192 Wi-Fi \u2192 Details \u2192 TCP\/IP and choose Renew DHCP Lease. This requests a new address without deleting every network configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a manually assigned IP address is required by the network administrator, do not replace it with DHCP without their approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Check VPN and network-filter software<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A VPN, content filter, security product, or organization profile can affect internet access even when Wi-Fi is connected. On a personally managed Mac, disconnect a VPN temporarily and test; reconnect it afterward. Do not remove organization profiles or disable managed security software\u2014contact the administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Run Wireless Diagnostics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try to join the affected network. Hold Option while selecting the Wi-Fi menu, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Follow the prompts. Apple states that Wireless Diagnostics analyzes the connection without changing network settings and creates a report useful to an administrator or support technician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not perform a generic SMC reset for Wi-Fi. Apple silicon Macs do not use the old Intel SMC key sequence, and a Wi-Fi problem should first be handled with supported network diagnostics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If only one Wi-Fi network is missing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The router and laptop may not share a compatible band, radio mode, or security setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enable all router bands supported by the router rather than forcing a single newest-only mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use automatic channel selection unless the router manufacturer or network administrator recommends otherwise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid WEP, WPA Personal, TKIP, or an open network. These modes are insecure and can cause compatibility warnings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check whether the network name is hidden. A hidden name is not a security feature and makes joining more error-prone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply router changes consistently to mesh nodes and access points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back up the router configuration before changing it. If it is supplied by the internet provider, use the provider&#8217;s instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If Wi-Fi connects but the internet does not work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try two known websites and another internet-dependent app. One failed site does not prove the connection is down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in or captive-portal notification and follow the network operator&#8217;s instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test another device on the same network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the modem\/router status and the internet provider&#8217;s outage information from another connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Windows, run Get Help network diagnostics.
