The goal is to identify one symptom, protect your files, and try the least disruptive fix first. Do not run every repair at once—you need to know which change helped.

Protect your files and stop for warning signs

Back up important files before system repair whenever Windows remains usable. Stop troubleshooting and seek professional help if:

A drive clicks, disappears, reports a health warning, or produces read errors.

The computer smells burned, becomes dangerously hot, has a swollen battery, or was exposed to liquid.

Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key that you cannot locate.

The PC belongs to an employer or school and recovery options are controlled by the organization.

You need irreplaceable files from a computer that no longer starts.

Do not repeatedly force the computer off while it is installing an update or performing recovery. A black screen during Reset can last several minutes.

Choose the symptom that best matches

One program freezes: Follow Application Not Responding.

Task Manager shows 100% disk activity: Follow Windows Disk Usage 100%.

Windows Update loops or fails: Follow Windows Update está atascado.

A program will not install: Follow Programs Won’t Install.

USB devices disappear: Follow USB Ports Not Working.

The laptop has no signs of power: Follow Laptop Won’t Turn On.

The whole PC is slow, freezes, restarts, or cannot start: Continue below.

Start with a clean observation

Write down what happened before changing anything:

Record the time and the exact message or blue-screen stop code.

Note whether the problem began after an app, update, driver, device, or hardware change.

Decide whether it happens during startup, after sign-in, in one app, or under heavy use.

Photograph an error screen if it disappears too quickly to copy.

An error in Event Viewer near the same time can be useful evidence, but Windows records harmless warnings too. Do not download a driver or delete a component solely because one log entry names it.

Safe baseline checks

1. Restart once

Save open work, choose Start → Power → Restart, and let Windows complete the restart. Restart is different from shutting down on systems that use Fast Startup and can clear a stuck update or process.

If Windows is completely unresponsive and normal controls do not work, a forced power-off may be the only option. Hold the power button only as a last resort, then wait several seconds before turning the computer on again.

2. Install supported Windows updates

Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Install offered quality updates and restart when prompted. Use the Settings interface;
Install-WindowsUpdate
is not a built-in Windows command and requires a separate PowerShell module.

Do not install a BIOS or firmware update as a generic performance fix. Use only the exact update and instructions from the PC manufacturer when they address your model and symptom. Keep a laptop connected to power during an authorized firmware update.

3. Check free storage

Open Settings → System → Storage. A nearly full system drive can interfere with updates, temporary files, paging, and normal app operation. Use Windows Storage recommendations and review each item before removal. Do not delete unfamiliar Windows folders manually.

4. Use Task Manager carefully

Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
and select Processes. Sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk one column at a time. Watch for a minute instead of treating a brief spike as a fault.

If a known app remains unresponsive, save work elsewhere and end only that app. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes or multiple services at random.

5. Review startup apps one at a time

In Task Manager, select Startup apps. Disable a nonessential app you recognize, restart, and test. Keep security software, hardware utilities required by the manufacturer, accessibility tools, and work-management software enabled unless their publisher or administrator directs otherwise.

There is no universal correct number of startup apps. Measure whether a specific change improves startup or responsiveness.

Use current Windows troubleshooters

Microsoft is moving many troubleshooters into the Get Help app. Open Get Help from Start and describe the specific problem—for example, “Windows Update troubleshooter,” “network and internet,” “audio,” or “program compatibility.” Follow the diagnostic prompts and review what the tool reports.

Do not use old
msdt.exe
command shortcuts. Microsoft has retired the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool and redirects supported troubleshooting scenarios to Get Help.

If Windows is slow

Complete the storage, update, Task Manager, and startup-app checks above.

Pause cloud synchronization or a known backup temporarily only to test whether it is using resources; resume it afterward.

Check whether slowness affects every user account and every app.

If an older PC remains slow with normal resource use and adequate free space, its hardware may no longer meet the needs of current software.

Avoid “optimizer,” registry-cleaner, or driver-updater downloads. They can remove needed settings or install incorrect drivers.

If Windows freezes or restarts

For one frozen app, use the linked Application Not Responding guide.

For a whole-system freeze, note what was connected and what task was running.

For a blue screen, record the stop code and undo a recent external-device or driver change when practical.

If the computer powers off under load or feels unusually hot, shut it down, place it on a hard surface, inspect vents without opening the device, and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics. Temperature readings and safe limits vary by model; generic thresholds are not reliable.

If crashes continue in unrelated apps, back up your files and use the repair and hardware sections below.

Scan for malware when there is a reason

If you see unexpected pop-ups, browser redirects, disabled security tools, or an unfamiliar program, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan. Use Scan options for a fuller scan if Windows Security recommends it or the concern remains.

Keep real-time protection enabled. Do not install several real-time antivirus products or disable security software just to test performance.

Repair Windows system files

Use these commands when Windows features fail, system files are reported damaged, or multiple unrelated apps malfunction. They are not the first step for every slow PC.

Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator. Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before System File Checker:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Allow each command to finish. Do not close the window during the scan. Record the final result, restart, and test the original symptom once. If DISM cannot obtain repair files or SFC cannot repair damage, use Microsoft recovery guidance instead of downloading replacement system files from another website.

Isolate a recent change

If the issue began immediately after a known change, reverse only that change:

Uninstall or update the specific app through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.

Disconnect the newly added device and restart.

Use the PC manufacturer’s driver only when the symptom started after a matching driver change.

For a recent Windows update problem, use Settings → Windows Update → Update history and Microsoft’s recovery guidance.

Consider System Restore when a restore point exists and the PC stopped working after an app, driver, or system-setting change. Review affected programs before confirming.

A Microsoft-documented clean boot can isolate a background software conflict, but it changes startup services and requires an administrator account. Follow Microsoft’s complete clean-boot article and restore normal startup afterward. Do not improvise by disabling Microsoft services.

If Windows will not start

Windows may enter the Windows Recovery Environment automatically after repeated startup failures. If it does:

Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair.

Keep the BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted.

Let Startup Repair finish and review its result.

If Startup Repair fails, use Microsoft’s Recovery options guide to choose System Restore, uninstall a recent update, or another recovery method that matches the symptom. Avoid repeatedly interrupting startup to force recovery; use the manufacturer’s or Microsoft’s documented method for the device.

Check hardware without risking data

Use built-in or manufacturer diagnostics for memory, storage, battery, and cooling hardware. Back up first when the drive remains readable.

A memory test usually requires a restart; save work first.

A full disk surface scan can stress a failing drive and is not an appropriate first response to clicking, disappearing, or read-error symptoms.

Do not open a powered computer, repaste a CPU, or replace internal parts unless you have the correct service procedure and skills.

Repeated hardware diagnostic failures, storage-health warnings, or crashes across operating systems need repair rather than more software changes.

Reset or reinstall only as a last resort

Before using Reset this PC:

Back up important files and verify that the backup opens.

Locate the BitLocker recovery key for an encrypted device.

Record applications, licenses, network settings, and account access needed afterward.

Disconnect nonessential external drives to reduce selection mistakes.

Settings → System → Recovery → Reset PC offers Keep my files, but that option still removes installed apps and resets settings. It is not a substitute for a backup. Remove everything also removes personal files. Follow Microsoft’s current Reset instructions and do not interrupt the process if the screen stays black temporarily.

Verifica el resultado

After each change, reproduce only the original task and observe the PC through at least one restart. A fix is credible when:

The original symptom no longer occurs.

Windows Update completes normally.

Task Manager no longer shows unexplained sustained resource use.

No new blue-screen stop code or unexpected restart appears.

Apps and files open normally.

If the problem remains, stop stacking changes. Restore any temporary troubleshooting settings, preserve your notes, and contact the PC manufacturer, Microsoft Support, or a qualified repair provider with the exact symptom and tests already completed.

Fuentes

Microsoft: Windows troubleshooters in Get Help

Microsoft: Install Windows updates

Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance

Microsoft: Use DISM and System File Checker

Microsoft: Stay protected with Windows Security

Microsoft: Startup Repair

Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows

Microsoft: Reset your PC

Microsoft: Find your BitLocker recovery key

Microsoft: Perform a clean boot in Windows

Use this guide as a starting point when a Windows 11 PC is slow, freezes, restarts, or will not start normally.
